In
networking, two or more computers need to be connected with one another for
sending and receiving data. Hubs, switches and routers are three major
networking devices that are widely used for connecting computers with one
another. Let’s see the features of each device with an explanation
Hub
It is known
for its simple and less expensive features. Hubs are used for simply passing
the data along the network. It is a fast and easier way to connect systems in a
small network. Data sent from one port is transmitted to all the other ports.
Switches
Its tasks
are similar to that Hubs but the difference is that the switches are more
efficient in passing data to other port. Unlike hubs, switches can recognize
the address of each node connected on the network. So switches can transmit
data to the particular computer among all the other computers connected on the
network. It uses the MAC address of the individual system.
Routers
Routers are
relatively expensive that the switches and hubs but routers are capable of
interconnecting two or more networks and delivers layer 3 packets. Routers
decides the path of data transmission when two or more possible paths available.
The transmission of data is slower than switches and hubs. In a network
connected with routers, the broadcast storm is avoided by blocking LAN
broadcasts.
