Time and time again a little niggle arises in some of the psychometric numerical reasoning questions that causes a little doubt for some people. What is a billion? How many zeroes are there in a billion? The short answer to the question in the title is, ‘it all depends on where you live.’ Geographical relativism is alive and kicking. The trouble here is that some countries have adopted what is sometimes called a ‘short scale’ billion which is a thousand times a million or 10^9 in size. At the same time, other countries have adopted a ‘long scale’ billion which is a million times a million or 10^12 in size.
