The Pathping utility generates information about network performance and problems that result in packet loss. It also is able to pinpoint exactly where the network slowness or packet loss is occurring, making it an ideal tool for the crucial task of assessing fault.
Pathping, like tracert,
is also essentially a ping with some modifiers. It sends multiple
Echo Request Messages to each router between a source and destination
over a period of time, and then computes results based on the Echo
Reply messages returned from each router. In so doing, Pathping
performs the equivalent of the tracert command by identifying which
routers are on the path. It then sends pings to all the routers over
a specified time period and computer statistics based on the number
returned from each.
